International School Library Day
On October 24, 2005 we celebrate International School Library Day.
It's an important day, because on this particular day in many countries all over the world, we will focus on what unites us, namely the enhancement of good school libraries and the professional development of school librarians and teacher librarians. On this day we are allowed 'to give ourselves a pat on the back' for what we have accomplished, despite lack of funding, materials and support by the school administration and governments. We celebrate the contribution we make to our pupils, our colleagues, our school and the community. And we will experience the results of our efforts by looking at our pupils who work in our libraries and who are happy and content with the guidance and support we give them.
This year's theme is 'Discover the Adventure'. We 'discover the adventure' in many ways. We discover adventures in books for our children, in stories and oral history and in the world of information and knowledge.
This day provides you with an exquisite opportunity to express yourself and show the world who you are and what you are and that your contribution to pupils, education and the community is vital for the development of people everywhere.
Of course there are many ways to do this: discover the adventure and find your own ways!
I wish all colleagues in Europe and beyond a very happy and successful celebration!
With best wishes,
Lourense Das
